10.08.2022 | KLEVERTEC Day "With All Senses"

Research expertise in food and packaging technology presented

KLEVERTEC - the Competence Centre for Applied Research in Food and Packaging Technology at Kempten University of Applied Sciences opened its doors on Thursday, 28th of July, and invited industry representatives and interested parties to take a look behind the scenes. At various experience stations, around 100 guests from business, politics and friendly institutions were able to learn more about the institute and its work on food shelf life.

The KLEVERTEC Day was held under the motto "With all senses", which meant that visitors could not only watch but also participate. They could take part in taste training sessions or test VR goggles, which are used in the development and construction area. Varied experience stations illustrated the three fields of expertise of the research facility Production, Filling and Packaging: from the hygienic filling of iced coffee to the production of dough in a "stirrerless" mixing system (High Speed Tumbler) to packaging material characterisation with state-of-the-art methods such as FTIR spectroscopy or thermomechanical analysis.

A real eye-catcher were chocolate figures whose moulds were produced with the help of a 3D printer according to the image of individual persons. In addition to this additive manufacturing process, a 3D scanner and virtual reality glasses were used to demonstrate further methods of digitalisation that offer potential in food and packaging technology.

"The KLEVERTEC team is thrilled that the first KLEVERTEC Day met with such great interest. This is a high motivation to continue and to continue the expansion of the platform with companies and institutions," says the scientific director, Prof. Dr. Regina Schreiber.

KLEVERTEC - an important partner in durability

KLEVERTEC optimises the shelf life of food by networking technologies and companies from different sectors and of different sizes. In the three process fields of production, filling and packaging, the institute conducts application-oriented research and development and focuses on the problems of industrial customers and clients. In particular, the numerous regional companies are offered holistic solutions that are ecologically sustainable but also make economic sense for the companies.

In 2021, after five years of research cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging, the university assumed overall responsibility for the competence centre, and thus also for its operational management. Competences and infrastructure have been further expanded in all areas since then. The team consists of professors, research assistants and students from various faculties at Kempten University of Applied Sciences.

"I am pleased that KLEVERTEC has developed so successfully since it was taken over by the university. In addition to the dedicated team, inter-faculty cooperation is an important basis for this, in order to advance new possibilities together with the food and packaging industry, especially in the context of digitalisation," says University President Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Hauke.
